O prêmio não tem uma reputação muito boa, é chamado pelo grande público como Outer SPACE Critics Circle Award, por ter indicações inusitadas como Young Frankstein, em 2008, e Shrek - The Musical, no ano passado, serem as peças com maior número de indicações. Peças que não são muito queridas pela crítica e entendidos do assunto.
